Experimental studies of an ammonia-fuelled Si engine

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the energetic use of ammonia as a fuel for piston engines. Ammonia is highly toxic; however, its storage and distribution are very well controlled due to its long-standing and extensive use in industry, e.g. for the production of fertilisers. By using hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources to produce ammonia, a so-called zero-emission fuel is achieved. The use of ammonia as a fuel for stationary internal combustion engines can contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, especially CO2. This paper presents the results of experimental tests on a spark-ignition engine fuelled with ammonia. The characteristics of ammonia as an engine fuel compared to conventional fuels are presented.
