Chiptuning impact on emission in NEDC tests

The article presents the results of engine tests to determine the effect of modifying engine control software on emission parameters and fuel consumption. The tests were carried out on a 1.3 MultiJet compression-ignition engine meeting the EURO 6 standard. The controller\'s EEPROM memory was read, modified by one of the leading companies on the market. The experiment carried out included the performance of two tests (for the factory calibration and the modified calibration) on an engine bench equipped with a dynamic brake. On the other hand, to ensure repeatability and comparability of the results, the speed and load controlled by the dynamic dynamometer corresponded to the NEDC homologation test. The analysis of software calibration changes showed that the parameters that were changed were primarily the characteristics of the boost pressure, the characteristics of the maximum torque and the characteristics of the maximum fuel dose dependent on the air mass. The obtained emission results show that chip tuning significantly affects the engine emission parameters by increasing the emission of toxic exhaust components, in particular nitrogen oxides.
