The influence of bioethanol content in gasoline on the physicochemical properties of engine oil

The increasing permissible concentrations of bioethanol in automotive fuels and the natural intermittent and prolonged dilution of engine oil with fuel present significant challenges for modern engines and engine oils. This paper discusses the effect of bioethanol concentration in fuel on the physicochemical properties of engine oil. The research aimed to understand how the bioethanol content in petrol affects engine oils of different viscosity classes and quality specifications. The laboratory study examined selected physicochemical parameters of engine oils at four viscosities and at four different ethanol concentrations. The authors analysed the potential effects of these factors on oil film formation, anti-frictional properties, oil durability and the possible impact on internal combustion engine life.
