Prospects for the development of fuel cells in railway applications

In recent years, there has been a huge increase in interest in fuel cell technology, which has undergone a period of rapid development. In the automotive market and in the railway industry, there is a growing trend in the production of means of transport containing fuel cells. The European Union is also striving to minimize greenhouse gas emissions in order to finally achieve climate neutrality in 2050. This article discusses the current use of hydrogen fuel cells in the railway industry. It discusses groundbreaking projects of hybrid rail vehicles in the last few years. It also presents a brief overview of hydrogen fuel cell technology, its advantages and further challenges that must be addressed to develop the market.
