Comparative study of aftermarket and OEM DPFs for Periodic Technical Inspections (PTI) compliance with new PN emission limits

Diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are the primary technology for reducing particle number (PN) emissions from diesel vehicles, significantly improving air quality. In response to stricter environmental regulations, several European countries have already implemented new rules that require Periodic Technical Inspections (PTI) using a particle number counter (PNC) to measure the efficiency of DPFs in capturing particulate matter. The PN-PTI test is designed to ensure that diesel vehicles equipped with DPFs meet the new stringent PN emission limits currently in force. This study evaluates the performance of both aftermarket and OEM DPFs through PN measurements using a PNC. The tests were performed under various stationary conditions for different vehicles, on both new and conditioned DPF filters. The findings demonstrate significant variations in PN emissions, with some DPFs not meeting the required regulatory limits. The study also investigates the key factors contributing to high PN emissions in DPF filters, such as aging and improper conditioning. Furthermore, the paper outlines strategies and best practices that may facilitate compliance with the PN-PTI test requirements.
