Catalogs and their functions in the creation of databases for IT tools

The basis for the design of complex IT systems, where a large amount of processed information is included, is the database. One of such system is decision support systems in logistics and transport. Database as an element of an IT system is a set of records, ie information that can be placed in appropriate tables adequate for matrix arrays in IT systems. The operation of the information system with the database requires that the information necessary for the operation of the system is pre-loaded. Mostly, information stored in databases comes from data catalogs developed either in the traditional form (paper folders, books) or electronically. From the point of view of information systems, the information stored in electronic directories is definitely faster in the implementation in the database. These catalogs of information may take different forms. Their primary purpose is to gather a large amount of information about certain objects or processes in one place for later implementations in the database. In addition to the information characterizing a given object / process, a given catalog can also be provided with illustrations that allow full identification of the object / process and some understanding of the characteristics described. The important feature of catalogs of information about objects and processes is that they can be built by many people at the same time, which significantly speeds up the possibility of implementing a complete directory in the system.
Authors present the role of the catalogs of equipment and means of transport in the database of a SIMMAG3D system which is a compuer tool for warehouse modelling.
